Effect of the Child Counselor¡¯s Self-esteem and Social Support on Job Stress

Abstract
The purpose of this study was to investigate the effect of child counselor¡¯s self-esteem and social support on job stress. The subjects of this study were 188 counselors who are counseling with children under 18 years of age. The collected data were analyzed by frequency analysis, Pearson¡¯s correlation, simple-regression analysis and multi-regression analysis. The result revealed that child counselor¡¯s self-esteem and social support showed significant negative correlations with job stress. When the child counselors have higher self-esteem, the degree of all sub-factors of job stress is lower. When the counselor have higher social support such as support of supervisor, fellow, family and friend, the degree of job challenge stress is lower. When child counselors have higher support of supervisor and family, the degree of stress due to role conflict is lower. When the counselor have higher support from supervisor, the degree of stress of role ambiguousness is lower. The child counselors, who have higher support of fellow and family, showed a lower degree of stress regardless of excessive work load.
